Dolci Gelati, an artisan gelato company, was started in Washington DC in 2005 by pastry chef Gianluigi Dellaccio. Dolci Gelati offers many great varieties of gelato with a consistent level of quality that can only be achieved with artisan precision. The process starts every morning with deliveries from local dairy farms and other handpicked fruits, fine chocolates and other fresh ingredients. Then Gianluigi begins to make his creations, like a chemist, he mixes the ingredients creating the perfect harmonies between fruit and sugar, milk and chocolate. Gianluigi's rich experience in pastry gives him an edge over all others as his creativity allows him to make magic in his "Laboratorio del Gelato" or gelato laboratory. Gelato offers the same great taste as ice cream with 1/3 the fat and none of the artificial ingredients. Gianluigi uses a 100% authentic Italian recipe and local fresh ingredients to bring you a little bit of Italy across the Atlantic.
When Dolci Gelati first opened its doors it began as primarily a wholesale distribution company to restaurants and catering companies. Using the close contacts and old colleagues from other restaurants Gianluigi was able to easily get his foot in the door. Dolci Gelati acquired several authentic gelato carts and began to cater all sorts of private events and festivals. Around this time Dolci Gelati was also offered a contract to run two locations at the National Zoo for the summer, finally, Dolci Gelati could be tasted by the public serving thousands every day!
As the company has continued to grow Chef Gianluigi decided to offer his tantalizing treats in pints. Now Dolci Gelati is also available to bring home and can be found at many high end markets such as Whole Foods, Dean and Deluca, the Italian Store, Vace, Taylor Gourmet and Yes Organic Market along with many others throughout the region. With these pints Dolci Gelati has reached the masses while offering them something they have been craving, delicious, healthy and natural gelato with that same artisan quality that the company has grown to stand for.
Dolci Gelati now has two new locations along the Pennsylvania Turnpike at Peter J. Camel and King of Prussia and there are many more to come.
Gianluigi Dellaccio was born in Naples, Italy in 1975. Originally a star Water Polo player, Gianluigi played for Naples as well as for Italy and became the Italian champion scoring the winning goal in 1993. In 1996 Gianluigi made a major career change deciding to pursue his other passion, pastry and the art of making gelato. Gianluigi packed his bags and made the move to Milan to study pastry culinary arts and gelato at the "CAPAC" (polytechnic of commerce), a top gelato and pastry school in Milan, Italy. After completing his studies Gianluigi moved to Bonn Germany to work with Lazzarin, a very famous gelato chain owned by his cousin. It was here that he was able to fully cultivate his secret recipe and skills. After his time in Germany Gianluigi moved back to Napoli where he worked at Scaturchio, a famous pastry shop where the world famous sfogliatella was created.
All this experience lead Gianluigi to believe that his future would be in the United States so in 2000 Gianluigi packed his bags and took his pastry and gelato expertise Stateside. Gianluigi has lived in Washington, DC for quite some time. Gianluigi's experience includes time at the Ritz Carlton and six years as head pastry chef at Galileo restaurant, rated number one by Zagat until is close for renovation in 2006. Gianluigi has made pastry for Bono, President Clinton, Queen Rania of Jordan and even the Pope. Gianluigi has experience in producing his desserts not only for restaurants, but also for large catered events, cooking classes, and various fundraisers.
In 2006 Gianluigi left Galileo to open his gelato factory Dolci Gelati where he began to create his delicious artisan product using his secret recipe. Gianluigi only uses the freshest, local and flavorful ingredients to create his tantalizingly good product. Gianluigi distributes gelato to various restaurants, specialty supermarkets such as Dean and Deluca, catering companies, runs two carts at the National Zoo and has various locations along the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
